“FeWo-direkt” study.

Summertime brings many tourists to Germany . But where do they actually come from? And which regions are particularly popular with visitors? A study by the vacation rental provider "FeWo-direkt" reveals which regions are particularly popular with travelers from abroad. We present the results in more detail.
The most popular travel destination in Germany for people from abroad probably comes as no surprise: Berlin . For decades, international stars have been drawn to the capital, some even staying longer, like Harry Styles recently. Travelers from the USA ,France , and Great Britain , in particular, return to Berlin time and again.
Also very popular with non-German travelers when planning their vacations are Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Hamburg , Rhineland-Palatinate , North Rhine-Westphalia , and Lower Saxony . Accordingly, it is less the German coastal areas than the mountain and forest regions that are particularly popular with foreign tourists. Most searches for these destinations come from the USA, the Netherlands , andFrance .
Searches for vacation homes in German regions confirm that the North Sea and Baltic Sea are less attractive, at least for foreign travelers. They are much more attracted to the Black Forest , for example, which has seen a 30 percent increase in searches compared to the previous year.
"The Black Forest has a fairytale feel for many travelers," says Susanne Dopp, spokesperson for "FeWo-direkt." "Especially in the English-speaking world, the Black Forest symbolizes the enchanted natural landscapes described by the Brothers Grimm in their fairy tales. The numerous castles and palaces in the region further reinforce this impression."
More tourists from abroad are also coming to the Zugspitze region, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Lake Constance . Also popular are the Berchtesgadener Land, the Eifel , the Moselle , and the Allgäu . Searches primarily come from the USA, France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, with Denmark also joining the list for the Moselle region.
Some regions have seen a significant increase in search queries compared to last year. Zell (Mosel) and the Volcanic Eifel region saw a full 160 percent increase. The Allgäu region saw a 135 percent increase. Somewhat more unusual is the growing interest in regions such as Potsdam-Mittelmark (+130 percent) and places like Saarburg (+120 percent).

The Moselle region is particularly popular with holidaymakers from other countries.

Even though the German coasts generally receive less attention abroad, interest in Rügen is growing. The holiday home portal reports a 105 percent increase. "The North and Baltic Sea coasts are firmly in German hands. Kiel is the first coastal destination, far behind, on the list of the most sought-after German destinations for holiday home vacationers from abroad (followed by Rügen and Sylt )," says Dopp.
Dresden can also look forward to more tourists, with an increase of 100 percent.
Travelers from the USA appear in almost all search queries. When US tourists head to Germany, they primarily visit Berlin, Munich , Hamburg , and Dresden, as well as the Black Forest, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Potsdam .
